Lunch at Hophaus, Southbank: River Views & Lunch Specials
Hophaus is an easy, relaxing place to settle in for lunch. It’s one of those spots you walk past a hundred times but somehow never think to try. I’m glad we finally stop in.
We arrive just before the Wednesday lunch rush, with the Yarra glinting through the terrace windows. The atmosphere has that pleasant hum — lively but not too loud — and the space feels more “catch up with friends” than “big night out”.

What We Notice First: Proper Daily Specials
Hophaus wins me over quickly with its daily specials, which genuinely offer good value, especially for such a prime location.
- Monday: Chicken Schnitzel – $22
- Tuesday: Steak – $25
- Wednesday: Burgers – $22
- Sunday: Rotisserie Roast – $30
We try a selection of meals, and the beef brisket burger is a standout. The brisket is tender and smoky, the kind that falls apart softly without being messy.
The meals are generous, freshly cooked, and well-priced for Southbank.

Terrie’s review
We had lunch at Hophaus Bar and Eatery on Southbank overlooking the Yarra.
Such a gorgeous spot on the mid-level of Southgate. We went up the escalators, but there is a lift. It is wheelchair accessible and has plenty of room to manoeuvre around the tables. However, most tables had stools, so if you’re a senior who needs a backrest, there are some tables and chairs more accommodating to this need, just ask. Service was good.
The lunch menu had different specials on different days. I found the schnitzel with potato salad and coleslaw to be a very big serve, and that’s why I passed on the sweets. So will have to revisit for a coffee and dessert another time. Friendly staff, lovely outlook.

A Handy Spot After a Show
Coming straight from a performance at the Melbourne Recital Centre, we appreciate not having to venture far. Hophaus is only a short riverside walk — maybe five to seven minutes — and it feels good to slip into somewhere comfortable without the fuss of heading into the CBD.
The service is quick enough that you’re never clock-watching, yet still relaxed enough to feel unhurried.

Side Trip: Handy stops nearby
One of the perks of lunching at Hophaus is how many interesting spots sit within a short, gentle stroll. If you’re making a day of it — as we tend to do — there’s plenty to dip into before or after you eat.
We always like to start at Mary Martin Bookshop on the ground floor of Southgate. We pop in “just for a look” and somehow end up thumbing through new releases, cards, gifts, and quirky stationery. It’s a warm, inviting place to linger before heading upstairs for lunch.
From there, the Arts Centre Melbourne is only moments away. With the new Performing Arts Museum now open, it’s well worth wandering through — particularly if you enjoy a bit of nostalgia.
A little further along, the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) beckons with its latest exhibitions. Whether you prefer the blockbuster international shows or something quieter in the Australian galleries, it’s an easy, crowd-friendly activity that suits most energy levels.
And of course, you’re right in the heart of the Southbank Theatre precinct, which always has something happening — from matinees at the Malthouse to evening performances at Southbank Theatre itself. Even if you’re not ticketed for a show, it’s a pleasant area to wander, full of light, movement and that lively artsy buzz Melbourne does so well.

Accessibility Notes (the helpful things you want to know)
Hophaus is easy to access, with a lift up to the mid-level of Southgate and wide walkways. The main thing to be aware of is the seating. Most of the venue is set up with stools — great for atmosphere, not always great for back support.
Tip: If you prefer a standard chair, let the staff know when you book or arrive. They’re happy to arrange a table with proper seating, but those spots are limited.

The Atmosphere
The riverside terrace is bright and airy, especially at lunchtime. Tables are spaced well, the hum of conversation is pleasant rather than overwhelming, and you’re never competing with loud music. It feels like a place you can settle into, enjoy a drink, share a story, and watch the river traffic drift by.
