Halftix Melbourne: the Original Bricks-and-Mortar Home for Show Deals
If you’re wandering through Melbourne’s CBD and stroll past 208 Little Collins Street, you might spot a small shop with colourful posters in the windows and a sense of quiet purpose within. That’s Halftix Melbourne—a longstanding independent business offering discounted tickets to theatre, comedy, tours, and more.
It’s been helping locals and visitors see more shows for less since 1983, and while the cheap tickets are a drawcard, it’s the people behind the counter who give Halftix its charm—particularly Matt McConnon, who’s been part of the business for over two decades.

“I never planned to take over Halftix”
Matt first joined Halftix in 2001, when it was run by the Arts Industry Council—a lobby group for the arts.
“I was first employed by them, never expecting to take over,” he says. “It actually passed through someone else’s hands before we took it on in 2009.”
These days, Matt runs the business with his wife Lindsay, who has also been with Halftix since 2004. Together, they keep the operation running smoothly from their city shopfront, staying true to its mission of supporting the arts while making live performance more affordable.

A unique experience in a digital world
While Halftix now offers online booking and a weekly email update on what’s available, the heart of the business is still its in-person service.
“I’m not aware of any other freestanding ticket retail business around—discount or full price,” Matt says. “We’re offering a product we love, and making people happy while we do it.”
For many customers, visiting Halftix is more than just a transaction.
“It can feel a bit like being a bartender,” Matt laughs. “We’ve had people who stop by just to say hello. Some from interstate make it their first stop when they arrive in Melbourne.”
One of his favourite memories?
“A man once rushed in, put $20 on the counter and asked for a ticket to anything—just had to be under $20. He was prepared to give anything a go.”

What’s on at Halftix?
Halftix Melbourne sells discounted tickets to a wide range of events across Melbourne. Everything from big-name musicals to ghost tours, comedy, river cruises, and indie theatre. Tickets are often available for same-day performances, but not always—some can be booked in advance across a range of dates.
They sell tickets on behalf of both major ticketing agencies and independent producers, with new offers coming in regularly. The weekly email is a great way to keep up with what’s available, or you can simply check online or visit the shop for the latest updates.
Matt says the reasons people keep coming back are simple:
“The price, the personal service, and being able to avoid the big ticketing companies. A lot of people get surprisingly good seats with us, too.”

Keeping the spirit alive
Like many small arts businesses, Halftix has faced its share of challenges.
“The biggest one has been the rise of online-only discount services,” Matt admits.
But Halftix continues to offer something those platforms can’t: a personal touch, a trusted name, and the experience of real people helping others enjoy the best of Melbourne.
“At this stage, keeping the retail store is still very important to us,” he says.
In a world of QR codes and booking fees, there’s something quietly wonderful about walking into a real shop, speaking to someone who knows the scene, and leaving with a ticket in your hand (and maybe a few tips on where to get a cuppa before curtain).

What others say about Halftix
Halftix regularly receives glowing reviews from customers who appreciate the mix of affordability and good old-fashioned service.
One reviewer wrote, “Matt and Lindsay are so knowledgeable, and the deals are amazing. I’ve seen more shows this year than I have in the last five!”
Another said, “It’s a Melbourne institution—and a must for any theatre lover visiting the city.”

What Else Is Nearby?
One of the best things about visiting Halftix is its central location—it’s a brilliant starting point for a whole day out in the city. The shop sits just off Swanston Street on Little Collins, right near Melbourne Town Hall.
While you’re there, why not pop into the City Gallery, tucked inside the Town Hall itself? It’s free to visit and often features small but thoughtful exhibitions celebrating Melbourne’s history, architecture, and people.
Need a pick-me-up? Brunetti Oro Swanston is located on the same corner. It’s a glamorous spot for coffee and cake, and it’s especially popular for a late morning tea or light lunch. If you’re anything like my mum, the sight of those cannoli in the glass cabinet might be all the convincing you need.
You’re also a quick stroll or tram ride from Federation Square, where you’ll find the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Koorie Heritage Trust, and ACMI, all offering free entry, with lots of places to sit and rest.
Degraves Street and Centre Place are both nearby for lunch or a wander, and the Athenaeum Theatre, Regent Theatre, and Comedy Theatre are all within walking distance—so you can collect your tickets at Halftix and head straight to the show.
