Terrie’s review
I had a wonderful trip to the city of Melbourne with my husband, daughter and granddaughter. We met at Southern Cross Station, took the underground loop and got off at Parliament Station. From there, it was just a short walk to the Victorian Artists Society.
What a gorgeous old building. I don’t often visit this part of the city, so it was fascinating to step inside and feel a real sense of history. For generations, artists and art lovers have gathered here to exhibit, learn and celebrate art—and the building itself reflects that legacy beautifully. I love the way it has been so well maintained, blending old-world character with the energy of today’s artists. It made me wonder about the painters who once worked here and what they would think of the 21st century creations on display.
Some enormous antique easels caught my attention. I’m not a painter, but I could easily imagine the canvases that once rested on them. The whole exhibition was excellent, though my personal favourite was the still life section.
In terms of access, there are five steps at the main entrance, but there’s also an accessible entrance via Moffatt Way and an accessible toilet on the ground floor. I managed the grand staircase without much trouble—though I was glad for the handrail!
This is a place for everyone, including families. Our granddaughter was delighted to discover a beautiful stained-glass door leading to a small balcony, where we enjoyed wonderful views of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Afterwards, we finished our visit with coffee and a snack at the ground-floor café.
A wonderful and surprising experience—I’m still discovering so many places in Melbourne I never knew existed.

Historical Tidbit
Here’s a fun fact. Within the walls of VAS Gallery, on 15th April 1915, the world-famous soprano, Dame Nellie Melba, began to teach aspiring singers the principles of her celebrated vocal technique.
On 26th February 1931, Melba’s funeral corteg passed near the door. Her devoted students, many of them weeping, piled the flowers on her coffin.
