Preserve Your Memories with My Life Story Legacy
Life is full of moments worth remembering – from the laughter shared on a family holiday to the stories of how love and life unfolded over the years. At My Life Story Legacy, Julian Dahl specialises in capturing these precious memories so that you and your loved ones can cherish them for generations.
Our contributors, Terrie and Chris, have worked with Julian to produce a video that traces their journey from marriage to raising children, and finally into retirement. Their love story is now beautifully preserved, ready to be shared with family and friends, or simply enjoyed in the comfort of home.

Expertise That Brings Your Story to Life
Julian brings more than 15 years of experience as a Director, Producer, Cameraman, Sound Recordist, and Sound Editor in Australia and the USA.
With a full digital media production kit and post-production studio at his disposal, he ensures that every video not only tells your story but looks and sounds exceptional.
Terrie’s review
I’m 73 years old, married to Chris for 52 years, mother of 4 children, and grandmother to 9 grandkids.
When our daughter first suggested we do a “professional video interview” to record our “Love/Life Story,” I was rather hesitant. But the end result is amazing and wiped away any reservations I had. The whole process felt like an adventure or journey!
Beforehand, we were given a list of questions, so we could reflect on our past. Julian also asked for photographs from the five decades of our marriage. Luckily, we had time for this, as it took me a while to sift through all my photos. Of course, this brought back many memories, and I became quite nostalgic and emotional during the process.
Julian also warned us that it takes him two hours to set up his cameras and other equipment. Seeing it all go up in our lounge room was like, “Wow!” It felt a bit like we were at a press conference. Haha.
Julian, being a true professional, has a very gentle nature and easily calmed any nervousness. The interview itself lasted about an hour and was edited down to 20 minutes.
The final product was a video of the two of us sitting down, overlaid with photographs. I have to admit, seeing myself on the screen was a bit of a shock. We had never even had home movies, so it was a new experience to see myself and hear my own voice! However, all our children loved the video and were delighted that we had left a meaningful keepsake for the next generation—one where they can hear our voices and see a bit of our personalities, instead of just a still photograph.
I would definitely recommend going through this process—it is a truly worthwhile venture. It may require spending some money, but it would make an amazing gift for children to create for their parents or grandparents. And you’ll love Julian.

More Than Just Pressing ‘Record’
While technology has made recording easier, Julian emphasises that filming is only the start.
“The real magic happens in the editing room,” he says.
Every project undergoes meticulous editing, including transitions, titles, colour correction, sound editing, sound mixing, media mastering, and formatting. The result is polished media ready for streaming or delivered on USB, often taking dozens of hours to perfect.

Serving Melbourne, surrounding regional centres and Australia-wide, My Life Story Legacy offers a range of video packages designed to suit different needs and budgets. Each package includes thoughtful planning, professional filming, and careful post-production to ensure your story is told with clarity, emotion, and style.

Meet Julian Dahl: The Story Behind the Camera
A Personal Beginning
My Life Story Legacy grew from a deeply personal experience. When Julian Dahl was just 32, he recorded his ailing father’s life story. Years later, his teenage children listened to the documentary and told him they felt as though they truly knew their grandfather, despite never having met him. That recording ensured Julian’s father continued to live on in family conversations and memories.
As Julian reached his 50s, he began reflecting on his own legacy and noticed many older Australians were asking the same question: how do you pass on something more meaningful than money or possessions? He realised that experience, insight and family stories are among the most valuable gifts one generation can leave the next. A life story documentary—bringing together stories, photographs, film and video in one place—offered a powerful way to do just that. My Life Story Legacy was born.

Experience, Care and Collaboration
With more than 15 years in professional media production and seven years working in Los Angeles, Julian brings strong technical expertise to every project. But his approach is deliberately different from fast-paced commercial productions. He takes time to connect with his clients, works closely with them to shape the questions, and maps out the structure of the documentary so everyone knows what to expect.
On filming day, his focus is on creating a calm, supportive environment, followed by careful editing and client feedback to ensure the final documentary feels authentic and true to their story.

Why Life Story Documentaries Matter
Julian often sees the deeper impact of this work once families watch the finished film together. As he explains:
“So often I hear that half the stories in a life story documentary have never been heard before! Questions are answered. Understanding grows. Life story documentaries bring families closer.”
For Julian, this work goes far beyond recording memories. It creates an audio-visual family river of life—one where future generations can hear voices, see expressions, and truly understand the people who shaped their family.

Making Life Stories More Accessible
To help more families capture these stories, Julian has recently introduced a Budget Documentary Package, available Australia-wide. This option uses a remotely recorded cellphone interview, professionally edited and polished, at around half the cost of a full in-home production. It’s an accessible entry point for families who don’t want to wait, but still value quality and care.
Life story documentary work remains a joy for Julian, and he plans to continue capturing these meaningful legacies for as long as he can.
