Melbourne Fringe Festival 2025: Our Top Picks
Melbourne Fringe Festival is back from 30 September to 19 October 2025, taking over the city with bold, brilliant and boundary-pushing performances. From intimate theatre to large-scale outdoor experiences, Fringe is where you’ll find the unexpected, the heartfelt and the wonderfully weird.
With hundreds of events across artforms, it can be hard to know where to start—so we’ve rounded up our top picks for this year’s program.

Melbourne Fringe Festival 2025
Disorderly Women
9–12 October | Curate Space | $10–$40
Songs, scandals and shenanigans set sail in this lively new musical about the first female convict ship bound for Botany Bay. The Lady Juliana became notorious as a “floating brothel”, but behind the gossip were women with grit, heartache, humour and camaraderie. Packed with catchy songs across a mix of genres and performed by some of Melbourne’s finest musical talents, Disorderly Women promises an uproarious and moving night of theatre.
Accessibility: Central city venue with step-free entry and accessible toilets.
Getting there: Curate Space is just a short walk from Flinders Street Station and serviced by multiple tram routes.

FreeSteps – Swinging Years
14–18 October | Meat Market | From $28
Witness dance in its purest form with this powerful work from acclaimed Taiwanese choreographer Wei-Chia Su. Performed by dancers aged 60 and over, Swinging Years explores the beauty of lived experience through movement.
Each gesture reflects resilience, loss, joy and the passage of time. Part of Fringe Focus Taiwan, this performance is both intimate and universal—a reminder of the stories bodies carry through decades of life.
Accessibility: The Meat Market is wheelchair accessible with accessible seating.
Getting there: Easy tram access via Route 57 (stop 12: Courtney Street) from the city.

Speed Dating with Cacti
18–26 October | Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne | From $30
What happens when you blend botany, neuroscience, spirituality and performance art? You get Speed Dating with Cacti—a mind-bending journey into the nature of plant consciousness and human existence. Guided encounters, meditations and demonstrations take you through moments both surreal and profound. Created by Toronto-based company Mammalian Diving Reflex, this work is playful, provocative and unlike anything you’ve seen before.
Accessibility: Some walking between garden locations; check accessibility information when booking if mobility is a concern.
Getting there: Accessible by tram along St Kilda Road (alight near Domain Road). Allow time for strolling through the gardens.

Fringe Flavours Night Market
Wednesday evenings, 17 September – 15 October | Queen Victoria Market | Free
Spice up your mid-week with free Fringe performances at the iconic Queen Vic Market. Wander between sizzling food stalls and discover a pop-up stage bursting with circus, cabaret, comedy and music.
With roving artists surprising you at every turn, this is the perfect way to sample the flavour of Fringe while enjoying some of Melbourne’s best street food.
Accessibility: The market is fully accessible, with plenty of seating and toilets available.
Getting there: Multiple trams stop right outside on Elizabeth and Victoria Streets.

Niusia
4–5 October | Clocktower Centre, Moonee Ponds | Seniors tickets $39–$42
In this touching and honest work, writer and performer Beth Paterson explores the complex legacy of her Holocaust-surviving grandmother.
Niusia is both intimate and unflinching, weaving memories, interviews and handed-down stories into a portrait of trauma, resilience and family ties. At times heartbreaking and at times unexpectedly funny, this piece will stay with you long after the lights come up.
Audiences can also join a free workshop with the creative team on 5 October, exploring how to turn personal and cultural history into performance.
Getting there: Just a short distance from Moonee Ponds Station, or tram route 59.

Festival Hub at Trades Hall
1–19 October | Carlton | Open Wednesday–Sunday
Looking for the heart of the festival? Head to the Festival Hub at Trades Hall, a heritage-listed venue transformed into the beating centre of Melbourne Fringe.
Decked out with art installations, Festival-only food and drink offerings, and a packed program of shows, it’s the perfect spot to spend an evening under one roof. Seniors can enjoy a relaxed meal or drink before catching a performance, then linger in the vibrant atmosphere.
