Big Band Dance
What a beautiful building our Melbourne Town Hall is. Such a delight to attend the Melbourne Town Hall Big Band Dance as an activity during the Victorian Seniors Festival.
A first for me and I was enchanted with the crowds of couples strutting out the old ballroom dances with the huge band playing in front of the magnificent old pipe organ. My husband and I joined in momentarily, but we didn’t know the dances.
We watched from the balcony. The huge crowd of couples swirling around the hall looked like a swirling sea of waves. I believe there were 1500 people on that dance floor. It was awesome.

Fancy using the photo of the 2024 Town Hall Big Band dance. Our two favourite old time bands so sought after around Melbourne.
The Hippocratics have cancelled it and disappointed over 1,300 senior dancers.
NOT HAPPY!!!
Hi Joanna,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It’s clear that this event has meant a great deal to you and many other dancers over the years. The annual Town Hall dance has always been a highlight of the Seniors Festival, and it’s understandable that any changes to its format would be disappointing—especially for those who were looking forward to it in 2025. (Us included!)
We weren’t involved in the decision-making process, but we’ve heard similar concerns from others who love New Vogue and Old Time dancing. If you haven’t already, it might be worth reaching out to the festival organisers or the City of Melbourne for more information about the changes and whether traditional dance events will still be part of the program.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, and we’ll be keeping an eye out for any updates on the 2025 festival program.
Best wishes,
Amy
G’day from FNQ
This year my husband and I were planning to be in Melbourne for this week, in particular so that we could attend the 2025 Senior’s Week Festival Dance at the Melbourne Town Hall. We attend New Vogue/Old Time Dances twice a week and this has always been on our bucket list.
I have been saddened to hear that a public servant has decided to change the format of this annual dance. I could not find out the reason for the change but heard that it was to enable the dance to be “more diverse & inclusive”. Not sure what that is supposed to mean. I can understand this, if the dance was not well attended, but I believe that this is not the case. Thought you would like to share. Regards Marg
Hi Marg,
We, too, were very saddened to hear from Peter that the Town Hall Dance may be cancelled this year!
We hope he is able to find another way to continue this outstanding event for seniors.
Amy
As usual, we heard that the Town Hall Dance was being cancelled, placed numerous letters or concern about the decision and were met with, So sorry replies. This event is and has been supported for many years and has become a HIGHLIGHT of the dance calendar for many seniors as can be seen by the number of attendees.
Then along comes some individual who throws it out of the mix, because apparently “ it is not inclusive enough”. How can you call a sold out event of 1300+, with people from all over the world in attendance, NOT INCLUSIVE ENOUGH. It is a dance event, I am sure if the MCG hosted a football event for seniors and got 10 teams playing (which is less than attend the dance, they would not say it was not inclusive enough, it would be a huge success for them) but dancing, who cares just cancel the event. Put something else on, we’ll let’s just see how this year goes, waiting with anticipation to see what this great NEW EVENT will be and where the inclusive crowd is.
Daryl Smallman
Bendigo.
Hi Daryl,
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts — I can hear how deeply disappointing this change has been for you and many others who’ve looked forward to the Town Hall Dance each year. It’s clearly a much-loved event with a strong following, and I understand your frustration.
Just to clarify, Seniors in Melbourne isn’t involved in organising the Victorian Seniors Festival — we simply share information to help people stay up to date with what’s on. That said, I know you’re not alone in feeling let down by the cancellation, and I truly hope the feedback being shared will help shape future programming in a more thoughtful and inclusive way — for everyone.
Thanks again for commenting, and for your ongoing passion for keeping dance on the calendar.
Warm regards,
Amy
