Melbourne’s City Library on Flinders Lane

Just around the corner from bustling Degraves Street, City Library is a special Melbourne CBD spot that many people walk past without realising just how useful it is. Maybe you need a quiet place to sit for an hour, somewhere comfortable to escape the weather, free Wi-Fi, or simply a clean and peaceful spot to recharge during a day in the city. This library is well worth knowing about.

Located inside the historic Centre for Adult Education building at 253 Flinders Lane, Melbourne City Library is Victoria’s busiest public lending library and a popular meeting place for locals, workers, students and visitors alike.

Melbourne City Library: Angie’s review

Do you ever wonder where you can stop & rest in Melbourne’s CBD out of the wind, rain or heat? City Library is a welcoming & safe environment to while away a spare half hour while you take a break or wait to meet a friend.

I head for the luxury of their well-stocked magazine area and then upstairs to the cookbooks. Their toilet facilities are excellent & offer personal items.

Directly outside the library is Journal Cafe, as is all the cafe culture & street art in the Flinders Lane precinct.

A good spot to pause during a day in the city

There aren’t many places in the CBD where you can sit comfortably for an hour without feeling pressured to buy something. City Library fills that gap nicely.

Inside, you’ll find reading areas, study tables, public computers and plenty of seating spread across several levels. The atmosphere feels relaxed and practical rather than formal. Some people stop in for ten minutes between appointments, while others settle in for an afternoon with a book or laptop.

It’s also handy during summer. On very hot days, the library becomes a welcome escape from the busy streets outside.

You don’t need to be a member

One of the best things about City Library is that you can simply walk in and use many of the facilities without signing up for anything.

You don’t need a library card to:

  • Sit and read
  • Use the free Wi-Fi
  • Work quietly on your laptop or one of the available desktop computers
  • Browse magazines and newspapers
  • Charge your phone
  • Escape the heat or rain
  • Meet a friend for coffee downstairs
  • Use many of the seating and quiet spaces
  • Use the toilets, including accessible bathrooms

If you do want to borrow books or access additional services, membership is free for Victorian residents. Visitors can still enjoy the space without borrowing privileges.

Stop for a coffee at Journal Cafe

Located within the library building itself, Journal Cafe is a lovely little hidden gem for a quiet coffee or light lunch in the CBD. It has a relaxed atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busy streets outside, making it an ideal spot to pause during a day in the city.

Many people grab a coffee downstairs before heading upstairs to read, work or simply enjoy some quiet time in the library. With indoor and outdoor seating and a calm ambience, it’s also a great meeting place before catching a train at nearby Flinders Street Station.
