Turkish Mosaic Lamp Workshop Melbourne: Our Review & Guide
Have you ever admired the colourful glow of a Turkish mosaic lamp and wondered if you could make one yourself? We decide to try our hands at this mosaic workshop in Melbourne and discover just how fun (and surprisingly relaxing) it can be to design and build your very own lamp.
With Turkish tea, sweet treats, and step-by-step guidance, this mosaic workshop combines creativity, culture and craftsmanship in a unique way.

What to Expect at the Turkish Lamp Mosaic Workshop
Our workshop is run by Sue at Art Masterclass Melbourne, located on 555 Flinders Lane in the CBD. She welcomes us warmly, provides clear instructions, and even brings out a tray of traditional Turkish tea and delights—a lovely touch.
The session runs for 2.5 hours, which feels just right for choosing colours, planning the design, and carefully placing each tiny glass tile. We’ve never done anything like this before, but it is easy to follow along and very satisfying to see our lamps come to life.
A handy tip: think about where you’ll put your lamp at home before the workshop, as that will help you choose the colours and patterns to match your décor.

Terrie’s review
A masterclass in Turkish Lamspshade making was quite a thrilling experience. When you first walk into the shop in Flinders Lane, the most beautiful colours of the extensive range of lit up lanterns really take your breath away. So beautiful. The chandelier with about 18 lanterns hanging down at different heights was stunning! It was such fun to sit with our lanterns and choose patterns of the mozaic and then the colours of the glass tiles and beads. These all come in a kit.
We then sat at a long table with lots of small dishes full of the most exciting colours of glass tiles and beads and with the guidance of our host, glued the tiles and beads onto our clear lampshade. So exciting to see the pattern grow.
Our 2.5 hours went so fast, happily gluing, talking, listening to the gorgeous piano music and sipping on our hot apple tea and turkish delight snack. We finished all the gluing and took our kits home where after 24 hours we were able to finish the project by applying the plaster. I found this part to be a bit tricky but just had to be a bit patient. How thrilling to then put the glass on the stand and switch the light on. So beautiful.
This would be such a fun activity for a craft group, or just a few friends together.

The Lamps: Quality & Options
One of the highlights is that you walk away with a beautiful, functional lamp that looks like something you’d buy from a store. The craftsmanship is sturdy, with a proper base and light bulb included.
You can choose from different lamp styles:
- Candle holders
- Table lamps
- USB rechargeable camping lamps
Prices range from $69–$159, depending on your choice.
And if you run out of steam during the session (our hands did get a bit sore), don’t worry—the lamps come as part of a DIY kit, so you can take it home and finish at your own pace.
