Held each October at Melbourne Town Hall, it’s free, welcoming to all skill levels, and draws a huge, happy crowd onto one of the biggest dance floors in Victoria.

Terrie’s review
A free event put on by the City of Melbourne during Seniors month in October is the Big Band Dance. Held in the beautiful Town Hall, this was a lot of fun. So joyful to see lots of partners dancing so enthusiastically to the amazing Big Brass Band. My husband and I joined in for a while, even though we are not great dancers! It’s just as much fun to go upstairs and watch all the swirling and twirling from above. Love this event.
You don’t need to know the steps to join in. And if you’d rather watch than twirl, the gallery seating gives you a clear view of the whole floor in action.

A different band every year
Part of the fun of the Big Band Dance is that you never get the same afternoon twice. The organisers bring in a different ensemble each October, so regulars get a fresh sound alongside the familiar setting.
In 2025, the honours went to the 17-piece B# Big Band, led by Henry K and fronted by vocalists Jefferson Smith and Sarah Maclaine, playing favourites made famous by Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee. It proved so popular the event sold out, with the waitlist exhausted well before the day. This year it’s the Daryl McKenzie Swing Band’s turn, bringing former Victoria Police Band musicians into the mix alongside ballroom DJ Geoffrey Proctor.
The event itself is a longstanding fixture of the Victorian Seniors Festival, which has been running in some form since the early 1980s and has used Melbourne Town Hall as a festival hub since 2007. Officially, the dance floor holds up to 1,000 dancers, making it the biggest dance floor in Victoria.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a good dancer, or know the steps? No. The event is billed as open to everyone who loves to dance, regardless of skill, and Terrie’s own account backs that up — she and her husband joined in without knowing the moves and still had a memorable afternoon. If you’d rather not dance at all, the gallery seating lets you watch the whole floor from above.
Do I need a partner to go? No partner is required. Plenty of people come solo or in groups and simply join the floor when a favourite tune comes on, or find a spot in the gallery to watch.
Is it really free? Yes, entry is free, but you do need to book a ticket through Humanitix in advance, since bookings are essential and numbers are limited to the size of the hall. Book online here.
What should I wear? There are no dressing rooms on site, so come dressed and ready to dance. Comfortable shoes are worth considering given the size of the floor and the length of the afternoon.
What if the event is sold out? The Big Band Dance has sold out in past years, including 2025, when the waitlist was also exhausted. If tickets aren’t available when you check, it’s worth joining the waitlist if one is offered, or getting in early once bookings open.
Can I just watch rather than dance? Yes. The gallery seating is there specifically for people who’d prefer to sit and enjoy the music and the spectacle from above.
