Sovereign Hill Ballarat is just such an amazing place to go as a family to explore what it ‘used to be like’ in the olden days! I remember taking our kids there many years ago, now just as much fun taking the grandkids.
A wonderful experience, seeing a town with unmade roads, where you can have a ride in a horse and cart. The old buildings are so fascinating, including all the little laneways.
Such a lot for young eyes to see how things were done a long time ago. Like the blacksmith making horseshoes, candle making still using the original old moulds, the Lolly Shop, General Store, and just so much more. I love how there are many volunteers and workers dressed up in period costume, interacting with the general public and giving out an incredible authentic energy. Gold panning is the fun experience we all go for, how thrilling to find that speck of gold and be able to keep it.
We had lunch in a beautiful cafe, very good service. Felt very posh being waited on with amazing waiters dressed up in their black shirts and white aprons and hats. There was quite a few different cafes to choose from, also the old pub had good lunch time menu.
Grandpa and Nanna didn’t go down the mine, but the younger ones did. How different was the style of living in those gold rush days. Very enjoyable fun day, lots to see that I haven’t mentioned. I would recommend this to anyone.
Discovering the Goldfields
In the 1850s, slates and chalk were the tablets of the day. At Sovereign Hill’s Schoolhouse, you’ll see what “old school” really means — where education was simple, strict, and vital for children of the goldfields. Ink pots, quills, and multiplication tables told their own stories, and the schoolmistress won’t let you off easy!
Around town, you’ll find rare trades being kept alive — blacksmiths shaping horseshoes, candle-makers dipping wicks, and tinsmiths crafting practical pieces. You can even join in yourself.
Make It Yours: The Makers Series
Step inside the Tinsmiths Building and get hands-on with the Makers Series experience — a chance to craft your own leather keyring using traditional methods. Developed by Sovereign Hill, the series connects old-world craftsmanship with the next generation of makers.

Entertainment and Live Performances
At the Victoria Theatre, magician Wizard Jacobs and their mischievous sidekick, the Goblin Sprightly, bring a family-friendly Magic Show packed with illusions, laughter, and old-world charm. Show times vary daily, so check the blackboard in the foyer for performance details.
And when you hear the Redcoat Soldiers march up the main street, make sure to clear the path and watch their spirited performance. The military drums, red uniforms, and period weapons make for an unforgettable spectacle.
You might also encounter the Troopers — goldfields police reenactors who’ll explain (and sometimes demonstrate) how law and order were kept in the rough-and-tumble days of the gold rush.
For something lighter, try a game of old-fashioned bowling in the saloon — a hit with families looking for a little friendly competition.
Sweet Treats and Demonstrations
No visit is complete without a stop at the Confectionery Demonstration, where the art of boiled lolly-making still follows the same recipes from the 1850s.
Watch the colours swirl and the mixture harden into beautiful sweets — it’s mesmerising to watch and even better to taste.
Sovereign Hill Accessibility & Comfort
Sovereign Hill’s sloping site and gravel paths can be challenging in parts, but many areas are wheelchair-accessible, and staff are always happy to help.
Courtesy wheelchairs are available on request, and there’s an accessibility map to help plan your visit. Rest areas, shaded seating, and several cafés make it easy to take breaks throughout the day.
Getting There
Sovereign Hill is about 1 hour 45 minutes from Melbourne by car via the Western Freeway. If you’re travelling by public transport, take a V/Line train from Southern Cross Station to Ballarat, then hop on a short bus or taxi ride to the site.
There’s free on-site parking, and plenty of picnic spots if you’d prefer to bring your own lunch.
