Bellarine Railway: a Family Day Out on the Swan Bay Express

There’s something magical about a vintage train ride—especially one that takes you on a journey through stunning coastal landscapes. Our multigenerational family—kids, parents, and grandparents—recently spent a wonderful day aboard the Swan Bay Express on the Bellarine Railway, and it turned out to be one of those rare outings that delighted all ages.

Bellarine Railway: All Aboard at Queenscliff Station

The adventure begins at Queenscliff Railway Station, where we step back in time the moment we arrive. The kids are immediately drawn to the historic station building, eager to explore the platform while we collect our Edmondson-style paper tickets—a charming throwback to old-fashioned train travel.

The excitement builds as the steam locomotive lets out a deep whistle and a puff of smoke, signalling it is almost time to board. We find our seats in one of the beautifully restored wooden carriages, with their sash windows and comfortable bench seats.

The grandparents reminisce about train journeys from their youth, while the kids, clutching their Spotto Activity Sheets, peer eagerly out the windows.

Diane’s review

Being with our two young grandkids on the Bellarine Railway, we had such a fantastic time! From the moment we arrived at Queenscliff Station, the excitement was contagious—especially when they saw the steam train up close. The journey along Swan Bay was beautiful, and the kids loved spotting birds and waving to people along the way.

The staff were friendly and great with children, and the Spotto Activity Sheets kept the little ones entertained. We also brought along some snacks, which made the trip even more enjoyable.

A wonderful outing for all ages—I’d highly recommend it for families looking for a fun, relaxing day out!

Rolling Along Swan Bay

As the train gently chugs out of Queenscliff, we settle in for the 45-minute journey. The route follows the edge of Swan Bay, a stunning coastal wetland teeming with birdlife. The kids point excitedly at pelicans and black swans, while we marvel at the views. With the windows open and the rhythmic clickety-clack of the train beneath us, it is easy to imagine we are travelling back to a simpler time.

We make a brief stop at Lakers Siding, where we hop off to stretch our legs and explore the Signaller’s Office. The kids love watching the locomotive turn around for the return journey.
