Ballarat City Tales Tour: A Fascinating Day Trip from Melbourne
A gentle, story-filled wander through Ballarat’s hidden corners.
I’ve always loved a good day trip, especially one that’s easy to reach, full of character and doesn’t require racing around. So when the team at Hidden Lanes Goldfield Tours invited us to try their Ballarat City Tales Tour, I sent our contributor Max along to see whether it would hit the mark for our community.
He came back raving — not just about the history, but the charm, the stories, and the relaxed pace that made the whole outing feel more like a conversation than a tour. If you’re thinking about a day out that mixes heritage, gentle walking and a touch of old-world style, this might be just the thing.

What the Ballarat City Tales Tour Is All About
This small-group walking tour (about 2–2.5 hours and roughly 1.5 km) reveals a quieter, more intimate side of Ballarat. Rather than sticking to the main sights, you wander through tucked-away lanes, heritage buildings and pockets of history that most visitors miss.
Local guides share stories drawn from real Goldfields history — colourful characters, surprising moments and snippets you won’t get from a typical brochure. The tour also includes a hot drink in a grand old hotel and a Ballarat-themed art print to take home.
With groups usually capped at 3–9 people, the experience stays friendly, unhurried and easy to follow — ideal for those who prefer comfort and connection over crowds.

Max’s review
What a wonderful walk with a lovely host, Jarrod.
We met at St Paul’s Anglican Church (1854) in Bakery Hill. Jarrod told us about the history of the place before we walked up to the rest of the building, where a plaque commemorates the spot where Peter Lalor raised the flag during the Eureka Stockade in 1854.
Our first stop was an amazing building that started as a hotel and is now an antique shop. From there, we explored a laneway on the Bridge Mall, where we learned about a female bushranger who pretended to be a homeless woman with a baby—only to rob anyone who stopped to help her.
Next, we walked to the other end of the Mall to see the creek flowing under the footpath through a glass panel. After that, we visited the Mechanics’ Institute; the reading room inside was absolutely beautiful.
Our final stop was Craig’s Hotel, a magnificent hotel from a long-gone era. Dame Nellie Melba even stayed here and sang from one of the balconies!
We enjoyed a coffee or hot chocolate while Jarrod shared a wealth of fascinating stories along the way.
