Alba Thermal Springs and Spa: A Relaxed, Accessible Escape on the Mornington Peninsula
Dark skies trailed us from Melbourne as we drove towards Alba Thermal Springs and Spa. But after turning off the M11, a patch of blue opens like a halo above our destination.
It felt like a sign.
And yes, circles of joy and heavenly experiences followed us for the rest of the day.
This was my second visit since Alba opened in 2023. After my first, I even gifted a package to my 30-year-old son and his partner—they loved it.
This time, I visited with a friend, with plans to chill and chat.
I’m about ten years older than her and, after a hip replacement, I pay closer attention to accessibility than I once did.

Alba vs Peninsula Hot Springs
Alba sits just minutes from Peninsula Hot Springs, which over 8 million people have visited.
Peninsula Hot Springs is expansive—70 wellness experiences across 42 acres—but it does involve hills, steps, and extensive walking. Parking can be fraught on busy days.
Alba offers a different experience. Set on 32 acres, it features 31 pools arranged in a circular layout. The design is more compact, with gently graded paths and shorter distances between pools.
Alba caps visitor numbers by encouraging online bookings.
It feels calm rather than crowded—a place for those who want a peaceful, relaxing experience.

Arrival: Slowing Down Starts Here
The reception space is light-filled and calm, with staff guiding us through our day—brunch first, followed by a wellness session.
Designed by Hayball, the building blends into the landscape. Inside, features include the stunning use of raw concrete, bronze, and glass. Curved walls, rounded windows, and elliptical skylights echo Alba’s signature “halo” design.
Even the entry pool sets the tone. Soft music plays near the entry, and almost immediately, you feel yourself begin to unwind. The calm is so palpable, I imagine the staff working here float home at the end of the day.

Change Rooms Also Set The Scene
The change room trails with greenery. Natural light stems from a large overhead portal, revealing cloud formations dancing across the sky.
We divest ourselves of worldly responsibilities, including keys, handbags, clothes, and phones. We place them in lockers. Now we are free, as our waterproof wristband will open the lockers later.

The Brunch Thyme Package: Excellent Value Midweek
Alba Thermal Springs & Spa won the Gourmet Traveller 2025 Hotel and Travel Awards (People’s Choice Award, for Best Travel Experience).
An integral part of the experience is dining at Thyme, a stylish but ultra-relaxing venue where most people eat in their bathrobes.
Karen Martini, chef, restaurateur, author, and television presenter (Better Homes and Gardens and My Kitchen Rules), curated the menu.
The focus is on nourishment, freshness, and high-quality seasonal produce, often sourced locally.
We toasted the relaxing day ahead with mimosas before sharing our dishes: Ocean trout poppyseed bagel with cream cheese, pickled cucumber, egg, dill, and watercress, and polenta crumpets with Peninsula honey, mascarpone, white fig, and thyme.

Wellness Session: Gentle Movement in Warm Water
Midweek visits include a wellness class, run in partnership with Studio Paradise.
Our Tuesday session, Liquid Body – move like water, took place in The Hide, where you step through a narrow passage down to a large pool in a semi-enclosed space, sheltered by a roof but without a wall on one side.
The design means swirls of intermittent ocean breezes waft around us as we soak in the hot water.
The movements were slow and accessible, with a focus on stretching and relaxation. The class is gentle, with the sound of lapping water and the instructor’s soft voice as she leads us through stretching and closed-eye activities for ultimate relaxation.
One of the benefits of visiting on weekdays is the included wellness activities held at 11.00 am.

The Pools: Designed to Reflect the Landscape and Support Wellbeing
Alba has 25 geothermal pools, plus a sauna and steam room, with an additional six private pools.
What stands out is how closely the pools connect to the natural environment. Rather than feeling imposed on the landscape, they nestle within it.
Plantings are a key: native grasses, coastal shrubs, and layered greenery. The pools reflect both the landscape and the sky—shifting light, drifting clouds, and openness to the natural world.
Temperatures vary across the site, allowing you to move between experiences depending on how your body feels. Pools have temperatures between 37°C and 43°C.
Each pool has its own personality: garden pools tucked into naturalistic planting, open pools reflecting sky and shifting cloud patterns, a rain pool with a cocoon-like feel, and a sunset pool perfectly positioned for end-of-day light.
Many pools follow Alba’s circular “halo” design motif, reinforcing a sense of softness and heavenly experiences.

Accessibility: A Strong Point for Some of Us
The layout is kind to the body with gently graded paths, wide steps with handrails, and wheelchair-accessible routes throughout.
Most pools are easy to enter and exit. The only one I found challenging was the wave pool, where the step out was higher than expected.
Staff are available if needed, with discreet call buttons nearby. All buildings and changerooms are accessible; four pools have hoists; lifts provide access to upper levels; and pool wheelchairs are available.
In 2025, Alba opened The Sanctuary, an on-site accommodation. One of the options is accessible.
Companion Card holders also receive free entry as carers.

Alba Club and Local Access
There is also an Alba Club membership, perfect for locals or those with holiday homes, which offers regular access. Instead of an occasional treat, Alba can become part of a weekly rhythm of wellbeing. Details here.

Who It Suits
Alba feels calm, refined, and adult-focused.
In Jane Austen’s time, visiting spa towns was known as “taking the waters,” and there is something of that same ritual here—quiet, restorative, and unhurried.
While I did spot a mother and son, most visitors were adults looking to unwind. Given the pricing and atmosphere, it’s particularly well-suited to couples, friends, and solo visitors seeking a quieter experience.

Costs and Practical Details
The Brunch Thyme package is $100 per person midweek and includes brunch, full-day bathing, a wellness session, a robe, a towel, and a locker.
Tickets and packages are available directly through the Alba Thermal Springs and Spa Website.

Tips for Visiting Alba Thermal Springs
Visit midweek for a quieter experience.
Winter adds atmosphere, with steam rising into the cooler air. But your bathrobe keeps you warm in between dips.
Check for midweek promotions—two-for-one offers do appear.

Would I Go Again?
Yes—without hesitation.
Alba strikes a rare balance: indulgent but not overwhelming, thoughtfully designed yet easy to navigate.
That night, I slept like a baby after a bath.
