Her Melbourne Rooftop & BKK Thai Restaurant: Midweek Magic
Last week we went looking for a midweek lunch that felt a bit different, and Her Melbourne on Lonsdale Street gave us two venues in one visit: a Thai canteen downstairs and a rooftop bar above it.
If you want a cheap, satisfying lunch with the option of a proper city view afterwards, it’s worth putting on your list.
Her Melbourne Rooftop
Her Melbourne is a multi-level venue with dining, drinks, music and art spread across four spaces. BKK, a Thai BBQ canteen on the third floor, is known for Bangkok-style street food cooked in an open kitchen.
Her Rooftop sits directly above it — an open-air bar with city views. You can eat at BKK, then head straight up for a drink with the skyline as your backdrop.

We started on the third floor, where BKK’s warm, close-quarters dining room suits a relaxed lunch. The drawcard is the $15 noodle lunch special — big, fragrant bowls that arrive fast and taste like they’ve had proper attention.
Service is friendly and quick, which explains why the place fills up with city workers most weekdays.
Lunch Special
The $15 noodles at BKK change seasonally, but are generally available Monday to Friday, 11.30am to 3pm.
The lineup we saw includes:
– Wok Fried Pork & Prawn Noodles with Egg & Chinese Broccoli.
– Beef Brisket Egg Noodle Soup with Bean Sprouts & Crispy Chilli.
– Yum Mama Noodle Salad with Chicken, Celery, Tomato & Lime.
Rooftop revelry
From BKK, we took the stairs up to Her Rooftop, and it’s a proper reveal at the top. If stairs aren’t for you, there’s a lift, plus an accessible toilet on the rooftop level.The rooftop opens onto sunshine, greenery and wide city views — more relaxed garden bar than rooftop nightclub, which makes it easy to sit and talk over a drink.
The cocktail list is a highlight. We tried a couple of the fruit-based options, both well made. Prices sit at the higher end, but the setting and the quality make the cost easier to justify.

The city of Melbourne has so many interesting eateries of many cuisines, we just have to be adventurous and look. Google Thai food and BKK Restaurant on Level 3, 270 Lonsdale St. comes up and honestly, this is worth the trip.
Lovely old building, although the entrance can be quite deceiving. You walk straight off the footpath into lifts which take you to the 3rd floor. The seating along the windows gives a very interesting view of the other surrounding buildings. Our lunch-time food was totally delicious. My daughter and I shared plates of spring rolls, dumplings, noodles, all very good.
Let’s check out the rooftop bar was the next suggestion, so up we went. What a surprise. Open air, looking out to an amazing view, casual lounge seating, some chairs under umbrellas. Some of us seniors would be wise to have a hat on as some spots were not undercover. Who could resist a cocktail in this amazing setting? A great atmosphere with a variety of age groups of people, all chatting and enjoying socialising.

Her Melbourne works well for two different moods: a cheap, quick weekday lunch, or a longer rooftop session with a view. It’s an easy way to make an ordinary weekday feel a little more like an outing.
