Il Caminetto Moonee Ponds: A Warm Italian Restaurant Worth Discovering
Melbourne has no shortage of Italian restaurants, but every now and then you find one that feels genuinely special. Il Caminetto is one of those places.
Tucked into the heart of Moonee Ponds, this welcoming neighbourhood restaurant has quietly built a reputation for authentic Italian cooking, warm hospitality and award-winning pizza. It’s also the sister venue to SHOP 225, the pizzeria recently named Australia’s best.
Our contributor Kathy recently visited Il Caminetto for dinner, and the experience reinforced why this restaurant has become such a local favourite.

Il Caminetto: A little slice of Italy in Moonee Ponds
Il Caminetto opened in 2018 as a family-run Italian restaurant focused on traditional recipes, fresh ingredients and genuine hospitality. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels relaxed and welcoming — the kind of place where diners linger over good food and conversation.
The kitchen takes pride in doing things properly. Pizza dough is slow-fermented for up to 72 hours, pasta is made in-house, and many ingredients are sourced locally to maintain freshness and flavour.
While pizza is a highlight, the menu extends well beyond it. Expect antipasto, handmade pasta, seafood dishes, mains and classic Italian desserts — all designed to capture the flavours of Italy without feeling overly formal.

Recognition on the global pizza stage
Like its sister restaurant, Il Caminetto has also attracted international attention.
The restaurant has been ranked among the 50 Top Pizza venues in the Asia-Pacific region for several consecutive years, a prestigious list that celebrates some of the world’s best pizzerias.
For diners, this recognition translates into something simple: beautifully crafted pizza made with care and consistency.
But awards are only part of the story. What keeps people returning is the balance between quality and comfort — exceptional food served in a relaxed neighbourhood setting.

Kathy’s review
Parents, grandparents and teachers know all too well it is wise to try not to compare siblings as each have their own personality and style. Such was my intention when I recently visited il Caminetti at 114 Pascoe vale Road, Moonee Ponds, the sister pizza/pasta restaurant to Shop 225 Melville Road in Pascoe Vale South. Nevertheless, I found it was nigh impossible to avoid the comparison, at least to some degree.
The values and principles remain the same at each: inclusivity of everyone, especially their dietary needs. The menus are closely similar: award-winning pizzas alongside authentic, traditional and modern Italian dishes. The warm welcome and efficient service: consistent and genuine.
My advance study of the online menu had me eagerly committed to the Risotto Profumato. I was not disappointed. Visually it was an epicurean work of art that I was almost reluctant to spoil. The varied and unusual blend of flavours of a leek sauce with a light lemon tang demanded some very slow contemplation. My friend opted for the Ravioli Del Pin which was similarly a modern take on the traditional pouches with silky, textured ribbons in a tantalising and complex sauce of parmesan milk. Our green salad was typically generous but this evening was unfortunately overwhelmed by the vinegarette dressing. Since my tiramisu failed to arrive, we shared a tapioca-based fruit compote which we agreed was pleasant.
Although mid-week, our early sitting was very busy and very family friendly. There was ample seating indoors (bookings are advised) and a spacious courtyard. When the atmosphere is naturally effusive, as it was on this occasion, I do tend to question the necessity for loud music which can intrude somewhat into conversation. Parking was possible in the side street and easy access was not problematic.
As is the case with biological sisters, the similarities with these two venues are simply worth recognising and celebrating. Their slight differences (the decor, for example) are interesting and enough to warrant return visits to each of these popular venues.

A menu designed to welcome everyone
Il Caminetto offers options for gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian diners, ensuring groups with mixed dietary requirements can comfortably share a meal together.
For many diners, that flexibility removes the stress of choosing a restaurant. Everyone can order something appealing, without feeling like an afterthought.
Alongside the food, the restaurant also offers a carefully curated wine list designed to complement the Italian flavours on the menu.
