How to Apply for and Use Your Free Travel Vouchers in Victoria
Accessing your Victorian Seniors Card travel vouchers — what’s changed and how to use them with confidence.
If you’ve held a Victorian Seniors Card for a while, you might remember the old system: the paper travel vouchers that arrived in the post each year, tucked between the usual bills and newsletters. Those days are gone. The process has been modernised, and while it takes a moment to adjust, it’s designed to be a smoother and more flexible way to claim your free travel.
Here’s a clear, practical guide to help you understand what the vouchers are, how to apply for them, and — importantly — how they actually work alongside your Seniors Myki.

Note: While we’re not affiliated with the Victorian Government or the Seniors Card program, we’re keen to share practical advice and help make sense of how the system works.
What Are Victoria’s Seniors Travel Vouchers?
Every year, Victorian Seniors Card holders are eligible for free public transport travel vouchers.
What’s new:
- The vouchers must be requested initially — they’re no longer sent automatically by post. Once registered and approved, your vouchers are refreshed each year
- Once registered, they are stored digitally, linked to your Seniors Card, and are refreshed each year (they don’t accrue if unused)
- You choose how to use each voucher when you redeem it
With free weekend travel having started from 1 January 2026, these vouchers are best saved for midweek day trips.

What’s Changed (From Posted Vouchers to Digital Claims + New Fare Caps)
Then:
Travel vouchers arrived automatically in the mail each year. You’d receive two paper vouchers and take them to a staffed station or use them when booking by phone.
Now:
- Paper vouchers are no longer posted
- Seniors Card holders must apply online (or by phone)
- Once approved, vouchers are applied electronically to your Seniors Card account
At the same time, Victoria’s public transport fares have changed.
- The weekday daily cap for a Seniors Myki is now $5.70
- This cap applies whether you’re travelling locally or right across regional Victoria
Once you hit the cap for the day, no further Myki charges apply.
The combination of capped fares and digital vouchers makes travel more predictable — but it does mean understanding how the two systems work together.

Do You Still Need the Travel Vouchers If Fares Are Capped at $5.70?
Yes — the vouchers remain worthwhile, but they work differently from the daily cap.
- The $5.70 daily cap applies when you’re paying for travel with your Seniors Myki
- A travel voucher gives you a specific ticket at $0, not free Myki travel everywhere for the day
In other words, vouchers don’t replace the daily cap — they sit alongside it.
They’re most valuable for midweek travel, where even saving $5.70 can make a nice difference.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for Your Free Travel Vouchers
- Have your Seniors Card handy — you’ll need your card number and date of birth.
- Visit the official Transport Victoria website here; or call the support team on 03 9321 5450 if that’s easier.
- Complete the registration form — confirm your details and consent to receive the vouchers digitally.
- Wait for confirmation — you’ll get an email when the vouchers are added to your account. No paper, no fuss.
- When ready to travel, redeem a voucher for a specific ticket (see below).
How the Travel Vouchers Actually Work (This Bit Matters)
Although there’s no paper ticket anymore, each voucher is still used to issue one specific ticket, digitally.
When you redeem a voucher, you must choose one of the following:
- A Metro Zone 1+2 daily ticket at $0, or
- A regional V/Line off-peak return / day ticket at $0
That chosen ticket is then linked electronically to your Seniors Myki for that day.
Important to know:
- The voucher does not turn your Myki daily cap into $0
- It only makes the specific ticket you selected free
- Travel outside that ticket is charged as normal on your Seniors Myki (up to the $5.70 cap)

Using a Travel Voucher
You can redeem a voucher by:
- Booking through the V/Line call centre on 1800 800 007, or
- Visiting a staffed V/Line or Metro station
- Let them know which day you want your Free Travel Voucher applied to
On the day:
- Tap on and off with your Seniors Myki as usual
- The selected ticket will be recognised and charged at $0
- Always carry your physical Seniors Card as proof of eligibility
Example:
- If you redeem a voucher for a V/Line Bendigo return, the regional travel is free
- If you also catch extra metro trips not included in that ticket, those are charged on your Seniors Myki (up to $5.70)

Using Your Seniors Myki on Regular Days
On weekdays:
- Your Seniors Myki fare is capped at $5.70 per day, anywhere in Victoria
- This applies to short trips, long regional journeys, and multi-leg days
On weekends (from 1 January 2026):
- Travel is free statewide for Seniors Card holders
- You still need to tap on and off and carry your Seniors Card, but no fares are charged

What the Fare Cap Means for Long or Multi-Leg Journeys
Thanks to the statewide fare cap:
- Distance no longer affects the price
- Melbourne to Bendigo costs the same as a short local trip
- Multiple trains, buses or trams in one day still max out at $5.70 on weekdays for Seniors Myki holders
- From 2026, all weekend travel is free for Seniors Myki holders
This has made spontaneous and longer day trips far more accessible.
What to Keep in Mind / Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need to apply for the free travel vouchers each year?
Once you’ve registered for free travel vouchers, you don’t need to re-apply every year — your voucher allocation is automatically refreshed on 1 November each year and valid for the following 12 months. If your personal details change, you may need to re-register. - Do vouchers expire?
Yes — they automatically refresh on 1 November each year and are valid for 12 months. Unused vouchers don’t roll over, so it’s worth setting a reminder to use them. - Do vouchers replace the daily cap?
No — vouchers provide a specific free ticket; the daily cap applies to Myki travel outside that ticket. - How many free travel vouchers do I receive each year? The number of vouchers depends on where you live. Seniors Card holders living in metropolitan Melbourne receive two off-peak travel vouchers per year, while those living in regional Victoria receive four.
- Do I still need my Seniors Card?
Always — whether using vouchers or Myki.

Final Thoughts
Even if it’s just one or two trips a year, for many people, using the free travel vouchers is worth it — every little saving counts. Think of them as a small treat for yourself: a free day out, a scenic regional adventure, or a midweek escape without worrying about the fare.

I think you may be slightly incorrect in saying you must reapply every year for vouchers. Yes, they do expire after 12 months, but mine have been automatically refreshed on 1Nov each year.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience, Rhonda — that’s really helpful. We’ve heard a few different accounts, so we’ll look into this further to make sure the information is as clear and accurate as possible. Much appreciated.
Thanks again for taking the time to write, Rhonda. We’ve since checked the official information and updated our article to reflect this — once you’re registered, the vouchers are automatically refreshed each year on 1 November and don’t require reapplying, unless your details change.
We’ve also added a note reminding readers that the vouchers don’t accrue, so it’s worth setting a yearly reminder to use them before they refresh. Every free trip counts.
We really appreciate you flagging this. Feedback like yours helps us keep the information clear and accurate for everyone.
