Ballet of Lights: A Sparkling Experience in the Heart of Melbourne

A Modern Twist on a Classic Artform

Hosted at Melbourne’s historic Capitol Theatre, Ballet of Lights reimagines some of the world’s most beloved ballets — including The Sleeping Beauty — through a creative fusion of light, movement and music. Each performance runs for around 60 minutes, making it an ideal length for those new to ballet or anyone who simply wants a bite-sized cultural experience.

Rather than relying on elaborate sets, Ballet of Lights brings the stage to life through illuminated costumes and clever lighting effects. The result is an ethereal glow that makes every movement sparkle. It’s both a visual and sensory delight, appealing to audiences of all ages — from wide-eyed children to nostalgic adults rediscovering their love for dance.

Terrie’s review

My friend and myself attended the Ballet of Lights: Sleeping Beauty, performed at the Capitol Theatre in Melbourne. Lots of kids dressed up in princess costumes, as well as a very mixed group of mums and dads and grandparents, were excitedly queued up to enter the theatre.

The tantalising novelty of ‘Ballet of Lights’ was teasing our brains as to exactly what this meant. The Sleeping Beauty Ballet of Lights performance went for 60 minutes. It really was an invitation to see a little glimpse of the world of ballet.

The dimly lit stage gave the ‘lights’ on the costumes the opportunity to sparkle. It was a fun performance giving us a taste of how talented ballerinas are, how their legs and arms seem to move so effortlessly on tippy toes, and many other dance moves. I have only been to one ballet before, many years ago. This delightful short performance has made me eager to look out for a proper full length ballet production.

I always travel by train to the City of Melbourne and the Capitol Theatre is only a five minute walk from Flinders Street Station. There is lift access halfway along the Capitol Arcade. Good location. My friend and myself really enjoyed this performance.

Why It’s Worth Seeing

For those who might find traditional ballet productions a bit intimidating — or simply too long — Ballet of Lights offers a joyful, approachable alternative. The shorter runtime, central location, and visually stunning presentation make it an excellent choice for anyone curious about ballet or looking for a memorable cultural outing.

The show’s atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, so you’ll find yourself surrounded by people of all ages — from children in costume to grandparents rediscovering the magic of live performance. It’s a wonderful way to experience Melbourne’s creative side without breaking the bank or sitting through a three-hour production.

We’d recommend the Ballet of Lights show for ages 5 and up, as they go for 60 minutes it’s a good experience to take the kids.

Helen’s review

I headed to Melbourne from Shepparton by bus (trains weren’t running), it was quite relaxing.  Met my friend Terrie as we were heading to see the Ballet of Lights.

Filling in our time till the show started was catching up with new shops and remembering old ones we shopped at when we worked in the city, a long time ago!

I enjoyed the version of Sleeping Beauty by the Ballet of Lights, it was different to the traditional ballet as their outfits were fitted with fairy lights which were stunning.
