When Cheap Cinema Days Don’t Apply

Note that cheaper days and cinema deals aren’t generally available if it’s a public holiday, during pre-release screenings, or at film festivals.

Cinema Memberships to Save Money

Cinema chains have two tiers of membership: a basic free one and a higher-level option with a minimal yearly fee that offers additional perks.

For example, I joined the Picture House Club ($20 for Seniors Card holders) at Thornbury Picture House. This gave me a free ticket and a complimentary choc-top or popcorn. The membership fee covered the cost of the outing. Plus, I continue to receive discounted entry all year.

Are Cinema Memberships Worth It for Seniors?

As most cinemas offer the free tier, you should consider joining any chain you visit regularly.

For the higher-tier memberships, be more selective. If you live near a large shopping centre, then Village and Hoyts are your best bet, especially for blockbuster movies.

Living in the inner city, I find it best to have memberships at Palace and Lido.

Film Societies and Movie Clubs

Film club societies are non-profit, member-based groups focused on appreciating cinema.

An upfront cost normally covers all screenings. For one near you, check the Federation of Victorian Film Societies (FVFS).

Groups such as the  Camberwell Film Society and Croydon Film Society have been running for decades. The Croydon Film Society meets at a regular cinema, the Metro.  Annual membership includes 18 films for $120 ($100 Concession). The post-film catch-ups are held at a  local. restaurant – a great way to connect with others.

Making a Day of It: Cinema Outings

Melbourne’s Historic and Art Deco Cinemas

Mainstream multiplex cinemas are easy to get to.  But there are unique cinemas in Melbourne where cinema-going is a more elevated experience, and it is worth visiting some of these icons at least once.

Camberwell’s Rivoli first opened in 1940 and is on the National Trust’s Register as one of Australia’s significant heritage buildings.  It was refurbished in 2000 with the consultancy of Heritage Victoria and Society Art Deco—a glorious historic cinema to visit.

The name Palace Cinema is a nod to the grand movie palaces of the 1920s and 30s. Some Palace cinemas are in fabulous Art Deco buildings, such as The Palace Westgarth(Northcote) and the Astor Theatre in St Kilda.

The Palace Balwyn is known for its Art Deco style, not just in the auditorium but also in the famous Art Deco-inspired bathrooms. Make sure to spend a penny.

Recent Palace Cinemas, such as Penny Lane and Pentridge, sport chandeliers and bars as part of a design strategy to cultivate a luxurious, nostalgic atmosphere that distinguishes them from the modern multiplexes.

The Art Deco Sun Theatre in Yarraville refuses to number its cinemas, saying, “Multiplexes number them, we name them.” Names such as the Grand, Barkly, Trocadero, Lyric, La Scala, and St. Georges are of historic cinemas Melbourne has lost.

Cinema Trips in Melbourne’s Tourist Precincts

Going to the cinema takes you places in more ways than one.

We have planned the perfect mid-week outing at Hoyts in Docklands, with cheap movie tickets, lunch options under $20, and plenty of fun activities. Read the full review here.

A trip to the Sun Theatre in Yarraville is a chance to explore this quaint village, with its fascinating streetscapes, boutique shops, and unique eateries. Read more here.

The Thornbury Picture House, located in a historic 1920s motor garage, places you in the midst of Thornbury, an area fast becoming Melbourne’s new Brunswick.

The owners of Thornbury Picture House, film producer Gus Berger and his wife Lou, recently opened Brunswick Picture House in Sydney Road. The cinema is next to Tiba’s, a brilliant Lebanese restaurant (no alcohol), and close to the Mediterranean Wholesalers (food shopping heaven). Nearby at Luther’s Scoops, people queue for natural ice cream even in winter.

Visiting Palace Pentridge, you are in a tourist precinct offering historic tours, a brewery, wine bars, and excellent restaurants. Lucky Little Dumplings, opposite the cinema, is so popular that you should pre-book on weekends.

Prices and discounts are correct at the time of publication and may change.
