Fiddler on the Roof Melbourne 2026: London’s Olivier-Winning Revival Arrives
The West End’s record-breaking revival has finally reached Her Majesty’s Theatre, and it’s worth booking early.
If you sat in the Princess Theatre for Anthony Warlow’s Tevye in late 2015, or caught Topol in 2007, you’ll remember how a full theatre hums its way out the door after this show. Fiddler on the Roof returns to Melbourne from Saturday 31 October 2026, in a new production straight from London, where it won three Olivier Awards. It plays at Her Majesty’s Theatre until Sunday 27 December.

About the production
This is not a replica of the version many of us grew up with. Director Jordan Fein’s revival began at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2024, then transferred to the Barbican Theatre, where the producers say it became the best-selling musical in the venue’s history. It went on to tour the UK and Ireland before heading to Australia.
Fein is working with choreographer Julia Cheng and designer Tom Scutt, who previously collaborated on the Kit Kat Club’s Cabaret in London and on Broadway. The producers describe it as a contemporary take on a classic, and the London critics were warm: The Guardian called it sublime and The Times called it a simply glorious revival.
The story and the score are unchanged. It’s 1905 in the village of Anatevka, where Tevye, a milkman, tries to hold on to tradition while his five daughters have other ideas about love and marriage. The songs include “If I Were a Rich Man”, “Tradition”, “Matchmaker” and “Sunrise, Sunset”. The show first opened on Broadway in 1964.

Who’s in the cast
Troy Sussman plays Tevye. His career spans more than 40 years and includes Les Misérables, Sunset Boulevard, Back to the Future and Disney’s Aladdin.
Sigrid Thornton plays Yente the matchmaker, her first starring role in a musical in over a decade. John Waters plays Lazar Wolf, and Alexis Fishman plays Golde. The three eldest daughters are played by Freya Boltman (Tzeitel), Ellen Ebbs (Hodel) and Caity Plummer (Chava). Violinist Ben Adler plays The Fiddler.

Planning your night
Two hours and forty minutes is a long sit, so choose your seat with that in mind. If stairs are a concern, stalls seating is the safer choice (see Accessibility below).
Rydges Melbourne is the official hotel partner and sits directly across the road from the theatre. Its restaurant, Bossley, is billed as a pre-show dinner option, which could suit anyone who’d rather not rush through a meal.
