Roule Galette: A Little Taste of Brittany in Flinders Lane

Tucked along the Paris end of Flinders Lane, Roule Galette is one of those Melbourne spots that feels like a small discovery. It’s casual, welcoming and quietly confident in what it does best: traditional French crêpes and galettes made with care.

If you’ve spent time wandering the laneways looking for somewhere light for lunch, an easy pre-theatre bite, or simply a good coffee and something sweet, this is the kind of place that hits the mark.

And the best part? It feels a little bit like stepping into a corner of Brittany without leaving the city.

What Makes Roule Galette Special?

At first glance, Roule Galette is simple. A compact shopfront, a few stools, and a counter where everything is made fresh.

But simplicity is part of the charm.

The menu focuses on galettes, the savoury buckwheat crêpes that are a staple in the Brittany region of France. Unlike the sweet crêpes many of us know, these are hearty, nutty and naturally gluten-free thanks to the buckwheat flour.

They’re cooked to order on a traditional hot plate, folded around fillings that range from classic French combinations to more modern favourites.

It’s quick, satisfying and surprisingly filling.

A menu that balances savoury and sweet

The savoury galettes are where many first-time visitors start. Classic combinations include ham, cheese and egg, or versions with mushrooms, spinach or smoked salmon.

Because the buckwheat base has a slightly nutty flavour, it pairs beautifully with rich fillings. The edges crisp slightly on the plate while the centre stays soft and tender.

Once the savoury side is done, it’s hard to resist moving to the sweet crêpes.

Think warm crêpes with Nutella, lemon and sugar, salted caramel or fresh fruit. Add a coffee and suddenly lunch turns into a relaxed little pause in the day.

For those with gluten sensitivities, the buckwheat galettes are also a welcome option. While the kitchen handles wheat for sweet crêpes, the savoury galettes themselves are naturally gluten-free.

No bookings required

The restaurant welcomes walk-in diners only. I often walk past and see it bustling with happy diners and sometimes a line of people waiting.

On one occasion I visit at around 3 pm on a Thursday with a friend. It is much quieter and we can comfortably hear our conversation. Perfect for some afternoon crepes as a little pick-me-up.

Dimi’s review

The City of Melbourne has so much to see and do within walking distance or a short tram ride. Well known for its restaurants, theatres, art, libraries, gardens, shopping, celebrations, history and so much more.

Today, I’m pleased to tell you about a charming little French restaurant, a short walk from Flinders St Station, called Roule Galette.

Famous for its traditional and delicious crepes and gluten free galettes, sweet and savory, filled with fresh imported, local ingredients topped with home made sauces, dressings. Good variety to please many, friendly service, cozy seating inside and some outside seating.

One feels like you’re in someone’s home kitchen and they’re personally cooking for you, yes please!

Opened in 2007 by Michel Dubois who moved from Paris, with his family, the year before.

Michel’s passion for making crepes, started at a very young age cooking them for his large family.

Can’t go wrong at this very popular little gem!!

There’s also one in Carnegie.

No reservations available, go a little early otherwise, wait till you’re seated.

Wheelchairs only at the outside tables.

Short step up into the restaurant, and at the back.

When we need to go to the CBD, the first place that comes to mind is Roule Galette.

Van’s review

For gluten free treats my favourite on Flinders Lane is Roule Galettes crepes!

Make sure to have the apple cider too, as they serve it in traditional French crockery which is simply beautiful.

A handy stop in the CBD

One of the reasons Roule Galette works so well is its location.

Flinders Lane sits right in the heart of the city, making it an easy stop if you’re exploring the CBD.

It’s particularly convenient if you’re visiting nearby cultural spots such as:

It’s also just a short stroll from the theatres along the Southbank and East End districts, making it a good option for a quick bite before a show.

Public transport is simple too. From Flinders Street Station it’s only a few minutes’ walk into Flinders Lane.

A relaxed laneway experience

Unlike many sit-down restaurants, Roule Galette has more of a casual European street-food feel. Some people grab a galette to go, while others perch at the counter and watch the crêpes being made.

It’s fast enough for a quick lunch but pleasant enough to linger with a coffee.

Seating and comfort

Seating is fairly compact rather than a full café-style dining room.

Inside, most of the seating is bench seating and stools, with a few tables tucked along the walls. The benches do offer some back support, but overall, the seating is fairly simple and casual, rather than plush armchairs you might settle into for a long lunch.

For many visitors this suits the experience well — a quick galette, a coffee, and you’re on your way exploring the city. But if back support is important, it’s worth noting that seating is more café-style than restaurant-style.

There are also a few outdoor tables, which can be a pleasant option on a sunny Melbourne day and give a little more breathing space than the compact interior.

Accessibility

Despite the cosy footprint, the venue does make an effort to be accessible.

The front door has a step, and there is a step-free entry from the laneway, with wide doorways and clear pathways inside that allow mobility aids or wheelchairs to enter the venue. Tables are arranged to allow movement through the space where possible. The outdoor tables are easiest for wheelchair users, and lovely on a nice day.

Accessible restrooms are also available.

That said, it’s still a small CBD laneway venue, so during busy periods the space can feel tight. If accessibility is a key consideration, visiting during quieter times can make the experience more comfortable.

Does it get busy?

Yes — despite being tucked into Flinders Lane, Roule Galette has built a loyal following.

The venue can fill quickly during weekday lunch hours when city workers arrive looking for something quick and satisfying. Evenings later in the week and weekends can also draw a crowd.

The upside is that the service is generally fast, so tables turn over fairly quickly.

Best time to visit

If you prefer a quieter experience, aim for:

Mid-morning (around 9–11am)

Early afternoon after the lunch rush

Weekdays rather than Friday evenings or weekends

Mornings in particular can feel quite relaxed, with natural light filtering in and the gentle rhythm of crêpes being prepared on the hot plate.

The Verdict

Melbourne has no shortage of French cafés and bakeries, but Roule Galette offers something a little different.

It’s simple, authentic and focused on one thing done well. If you’re looking for a light but satisfying lunch, a sweet treat, or somewhere a little different from the usual café options, this tiny Flinders Lane crêperie is worth seeking out.

Sometimes the best meals in Melbourne aren’t elaborate at all. Sometimes they’re just a perfectly folded galette, enjoyed in a quiet laneway.
