Ocean Photographer of the Year Exhibition Dives into Melbourne’s Seaworks
Prepare to be mesmerised! From January 29th to July 13th, 2025, Seaworks in Williamstown will host the awe-inspiring Ocean Photographer of the Year (OPY) exhibition.
Featuring over 100 breathtaking photographs, this internationally acclaimed showcase celebrates the beauty, power, and fragility of our oceans, offering a rare glimpse above and beneath the waves.
Exhibition: Ocean Photographer of the Year
After captivating crowds at Sydney’s Australian National Maritime Museum in 2024, the exhibition makes its Victorian debut at Seaworks, Melbourne’s premier maritime precinct.
The collaboration between Oceanographic Magazine and Swiss luxury watchmaker Blancpain ensures this is no ordinary photography exhibit—it’s a celebration of marine life, ocean conservation, and artistic brilliance.
Curated by a panel of expert judges, the exhibition highlights excellence across multiple categories, including:
- The Ocean
- Wildlife
- Fine Art
- Adventure
- Conservation (Hope & Impact)
- Human Connection
- Young Photographer of the Year
- Ocean Portfolio Award
A Spotlight on Women in Ocean Photography
A standout feature of the exhibition is the Female Fifty Fathoms Award, introduced in 2021 by Oceanographic Magazine and Blancpain to honour exceptional women in ocean photography.
Nominated by their peers, these photographers celebrate the beauty and power of the ocean through their unique perspectives.
Glenn Jones, Executive Officer of the Seaworks Foundation, expressed his excitement:
“This exhibition is not just about stunning photography—it’s a celebration of the ocean’s beauty, fragility, and importance to life on Earth. We’re proud to bring this global event to Melbourne’s maritime heart.”
The Stories Behind the Images
Each photograph tells its own story, from captivating wildlife encounters to sweeping underwater landscapes and thought-provoking scenes of human-ocean interaction.
These images remind us of the ocean’s unparalleled beauty and its critical role in sustaining life.
Recognised Globally
Now in its 5th year, the Ocean Photographer of the Year competition, run by London-based Oceanographic Magazine, is recognised worldwide for its celebration of marine photography.
It’s more than just a competition—it’s a platform to raise awareness about ocean conservation and celebrate the talent of photographers who capture the beauty and fragility of the marine world.
Why Visit?
Glenn Jones, Executive Officer at the Seaworks Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm:
“Seaworks is thrilled to showcase these stunning works from the world’s leading ocean photographers. It’s a chance to celebrate the beauty of our oceans and spark conversations about how we can all do our bit to protect them for future generations.”
Located on the scenic waterfront of Williamstown, Seaworks offers panoramic views across Hobson’s Bay to Melbourne’s city skyline. As a vibrant hub for maritime history, arts, and events, it’s the perfect setting to immerse yourself in the stories captured by these photographs.
From graceful turtles gliding underwater to powerful whales breaking the surface and whimsical puffins in flight, the exhibition is a tribute to the wonders of marine life.
It promises to resonate with nature lovers, conservationists, scuba divers, surfers, and families looking for a unique outing during the summer holidays.
Will Harrison, Director of Oceanographic Magazine, explained the exhibition’s universal appeal:
“The ocean is the beating heart of our planet, and its story is one that impacts us all. The people of Melbourne, with their deep connection to the coastline, will find this exhibition particularly moving.”
Seaworks: A Venue with Heart
Seaworks is no stranger to hosting world-class photography. Earlier this year, it wowed visitors with the Steve McCurry ‘ICONS’ exhibition, attracting 10,000 visitors a month. Warwick Norman, Chairman of the Seaworks Foundation, sees the Ocean Photographer of the Year exhibition as a natural follow-up.
“This display is of a similar calibre but with a strict ocean flavour,” he said. “It celebrates all things maritime and will appeal to anyone who loves the water.”
In addition to the temporary exhibition, Seaworks is developing a permanent maritime gallery, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of Victoria’s cultural landscape. The OPY exhibition will return annually until 2029, making it a highlight of Melbourne’s event calendar for years to come.
