Gaylord Indian Restaurant Offers a Flavourful CBD Lunch
Tucked inside the historic Grand Hotel on Spencer Street, Gaylord Indian Restaurant offers a refined yet welcoming atmosphere that transports you straight to India. With its handcrafted marble paintings, dim lighting, and rich aromas wafting from the kitchen, it’s no wonder this fine dining Indian restaurant in Melbourne has been a favourite for decades.
We visited for lunch, eager to try their popular Thali specials, and let’s just say—it didn’t disappoint.

Gaylord Indian Restaurant Melbourne CBD
Chris’ review
For lunch, we found a delicious place for Indian food right at the South West corner of Melbourne’s CBD.
Gaylord Indian Restaurant is located at the Yarra end of Spencer Street in the beautifully refurbished Victorian Railways Administration Offices, now the Grand Hotel Melbourne.
This is a peaceful oasis, close to the City Centre but positionally removed from the lunch-time crush. If you’re either walking from Docklands to Southern Cross Station or the CBD, or if you’re in town and would just like to avoid the midday crowds, then Gaylord Indian Restaurant is ideal.
From the lunch menu I was overjoyed by the selection of tastes in the Lamb Thali followed by Ice cream and a refreshing mango lassi.
Experiencing the tastes of India was enhanced by the peaceful, un-rushed, setting and the friendly and informative staff at Gaylord.
The prices too, were very reasonable, especially with the Seniors Discount offered. This was a stand-out lunch in our Seniors-in-Melbourne experience.

The Thali Experience
If you love variety, a Thali is the way to go. A traditional Indian meal served on a platter, it features a selection of curries, rice, bread, and accompaniments, giving you a little taste of everything.
We ordered the Chicken Thali and Lamb Thali, both beautifully presented with an array of small bowls filled with fragrant curries, lentils, raita, salad, and soft, fluffy naan. The chicken was tender, infused with warm spices, while the lamb melted in the mouth, rich and deeply flavoured. Every bite was perfectly balanced—spicy, creamy, and tangy all at once.
For a little extra heat, we also tried the Beef Vindaloo, a dish known for its fiery kick. It was bold, packed with layers of spice, and just the right level of heat to keep things exciting.
To cool things down, we sipped on Mango Lassi, a thick, creamy yoghurt drink with just the right amount of sweetness. It was refreshing, soothing, and the perfect contrast to the bold flavours of the curries.
Dessert at Gaylord Restaurant
No visit to an Indian restaurant in Melbourne is complete without dessert, and we couldn’t resist trying two classics—Gulab Jamun and Paan Kulfi.
The Gulab Jamun—soft, syrup-soaked dumplings—were warm, sticky, and indulgently sweet. Meanwhile, the Paan Kulfi, a traditional Indian ice cream flavoured with betel leaves and spices, was a surprising delight. Earthy, slightly floral, and wonderfully creamy, it was the perfect way to end the meal.
The Verdict
With Thalis for just $22 and a 10% discount for seniors, Gaylord Indian Restaurant is a fantastic spot for an affordable yet luxurious meal. Whether you’re looking for an Indian restaurant in the CBD for a casual lunch or an elegant dinner, Gaylord Indian delivers on flavour, atmosphere, and value.
The combination of authentic dishes, generous portions, and a warm, inviting setting makes Gaylord Restaurant a must-visit. Just be sure to book ahead—this hidden gem fills up fast!

Tip: Take a moment to admire the striking tram sculpture out front of the Grand Hotel. Titled Raising the Rattler Pole—The Last of the Connie’s, this artwork by David Bell pays tribute to Melbourne’s last W-class “rattler” tram. Unlike the yellow and white trams you see today, this one is painted black, giving it a ghostly, nostalgic presence.
